ISSUES

GMOs tends to have a negative connotation wherever it stands. In fact, that is not always the case due to the fact that genetic modified crops enhances both a negative and positive impact on our the revolving world.

Social & Political Issue of Genetic Modifying Crops

The stand for modifications of food range from being completely against it to wanting mandatory labeling to fully supporting it. As the technology of genetic engineering on the food that mankind now consumes, one can see the largely benefited population around the world due to it. Some however, does not stand for such evident and are still opposing it. Whether one support it or not, genetic alternation in food is present in most if not all of the food that ones consumes.

The main controversial revolves around the labeling of genetic modified crops and the people's rights to be notified of the things presented in the food that they are currently consuming. As of right now, 64 countries requires mandatory labeling of genetic engineering food. Countries like the United States and Canada does not however, require clear on-package labels for GMOs food. This in return result in a huge arise in both sides of the debate on labeling of genetic modified crops.

Economic Issue of Genetic Modifying Crops

Over the years, genetic variation in crops have significantly seen to have led to great results for corporate and consumers for nutrients needed. This was not the case for farmers, who now have to purchase the seeds at a higher cost. With the increase in the amount of demands for genetic engineering crops, companies found themselves exceeding the amount of seed costs for their own benefits. As shown on this graph, the cost of corn significantly increased from $23.98 in 1995 to $101.04 as of 2014.

Public's Thoughts on Genetically Modified Crops

Though there are plenty amount of people who are against the idea of alternating genetic materials of crops, many does not actually know how GMOs effect oneself. Base on the pie graph of surveys on foods with genetically modified ingredients is neither better nor worse than those without.

Farmers such as Jennie Schmidt reported the good outcome from genetically modified crops that save"in time, labor, fuel and wear and tear on her machinery" (health.usnews.com). Million of crops from papaya from Hawaii to the cotton in Arizona resisting pest were able to be produced just from this technology, saving thousands of farmers.

* GMOs may lead to cancer, autism, allergies, and other illnesses.

* GMOs harm bees and other pollinators.

* GMOs cause an increased in the prices of food.

* The National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine (NAS) found of no such correlation between genetically modified crops risking human's health.

* A Bee Ambassador, Chris Sansone with more than 30 years of experience concluded through various scientific studies that GMOs does not actually impact the health of bees or other pollinators.

* There have been variety of studies from Tyner et al at Purdue University regarding the price of food due to GMOs. It indicates that without genetic engineering crops, prices of food will in fact be a lot more expensive due to decline in such as corn yield of 11.2% and would increase up to 28% in price. Therefore, with GMOs it is possible for more yield, lowering the prices of food.
